characterization

ch. 1 Gatsby is a man who claims to have many acomplishments throughout his life. he claims to have gone to oxford university, collected jewels in Europe....etc just to name a few. Nick does not know if these claims are true or not but they seem to be because of his endless amount of money.

ch.2 Myrtle was described in the book as a woman in her middle thirties, stout, and unattractive. She is also described as being rude and upfront like how she speaks to her husband. "Get some chairs, why don't you, so somebody can sit down." She also talks abut how she is unhappy with her marriage to Wilson and that he basically isn't good enough for her and she never had any real feelings for him. "I married him because i thought he was a gentleman. i thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe. you were crazy about him for a while said Catherine. Crazy about him! cried Myrtle incredulously. who said i was crazy about him? i never was any more crazy about him than i was about that man there." (35)

Mr. Mckee is described as a man with feminine like features and very classy looking and respectful. his wife is described as being shallow and conceited. "His wife was shrill, languid, handsome, and horrible. she told me with pride that her husband had photographed her a hundred and twenty seven times since they had been married."

ch. 3 Jordan baker is described as a cheerful down to earth person in this chapter. She is also described as a trustworthy person because Gatsby tells her about how him and Daisy were once lovers. "Gatsby's butler was suddenly standing beside us. Miss Baker? he inquired. i beg your pardon, but Mr. Gatsby would like to speak with you alone."Although, Nick thinks she is a pretty dishonest person and he also knows that she cheated on her golf tournament. Never the less, he is strangely attracted to her.

ch.4 Mr. Wolfsheim is described as a man with little personality. I can tell because of the way Nick says he sees darkness in his eyes. "A small, flat nosed Jew raised his large head and regarded me iwth two fine growths of hair which luxuriated in either nostril. after a moment i discovered his tiny eyes in the half darkness." (69)

Gatsby is described as being a pretty powerful man. I feel this way because of the scene with the policeman. The policeman is about to give him a ticket for speeding, but when Gatsby pulls out a white card, which happens to be a Christmas card from the commissioner, the policeman is the one to apologize in a way. "Right you are agreed the policeman. Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse me!" (68).

ch. 5 In this chapter i begin to view Daisy as someone who doesn't really much care for his husband. the reason i think this is because of the way she almost automatically agrees not to bring Tom when Nick asks her to come alone to his place.  "Don't bring Tom i warner her. What? Don't bring Tom. Who is "Tom" she asked innocently." (83)

Also in this chapter i think that Gatsby must really have strong feelings for Daisy. i can tell by the way he gets really nervous when he first sees Daisy. "This is a terrible mistake he said shaking his head. a terrible, terrible mistake  You're just embarrassed that's all." (87)

ch. 6 In this chapter Nick describes Cody as a fifty year old millionaire. He says he looks like a gray florid man with a hard empty face. Cody is the man that Gatsby inherited his money from him too. ($25,000)

ch.7 In this chapter i see a totally different side of Gatsby. When Tom starts to realize that there is definitely something going on between Daisy and Gatsby he begins to question Gatsby about wether or not he even went to Oxford and what kind of problems he was trying to cause in his house. Tom loses his temper and snaps at Daisy and thats when Gatsby loses his patience too and tells Tom that his wife doesn't love him in fact she loves him. Gatsby and Tom are arguing and Daisy is dragged in the middle. Gatsby cannot seem to live with the fact that at one point, Daisy loved Tom too. In a way, he wants Daisy all to himself and is very stubborn about it.

ch. 8 In this chapter i start to view Wilson as a short tempered maniac because of how he kills Gatsby just because he hears from Tom that the car that hit his wife's was his. Little did he know that it was actually Tom's wife who had been driving and killed Myrtle. "The chauffeur, he was one of Wolfsheims proteges, heard the shots, afterward he could only say that he hadnt thought much about them." (161)

ch.9 In this chapter i see that Nick is really affected by Gatsby's death. he knows that Tom is the one who tells Wilson about who's car it was. Nick questions Tom and Tom tells him that simply that he told Wilson the truth and didn't seem to be affected by Gatsby's death and in a way says that he deserved it. "What if i did tell him? That fellow had it coming to him." After the death of Gatsby Nick begins to have a very different opinion on not just Tom but Daisy as well. "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy. They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made..."
